Artist Statement

Drawing from memories of solitary explorations, the active search for objects with attached sentimental values, conversations with people, and physical and emotional changes, I investigate these deeply personal complex mental spaces through mark-making, painting with my hands, printing various matrices in different colors, and overlaying layers to form asymmetrical compositions, playing with how they are read.

I create works on a human scale, large enough to bring focus to the physicality, layers, and raw materials used, but not altogether intimidating, inviting the viewer close to inspect, observe, and witness the delicate changes in marks, patterns, and surface texture. I create works with multiple layers to be investigated, excavated like an archeologist, cutting away layers to reveal what's underneath, with other parts still hidden under the top layers. Mimicking the technique of step-trenching, I create multiple perspectives, revealing, marking, documenting, and archiving layers to the viewer so they are witnesses to the changes over time. Each layer I create leaves behind multiple "treats", a way to keep the viewer engaged and to keep exploring what is before them. I let the viewer in on moments of just being, knowing that there is no resolution, just acceptance, and submission to the process of change.
